IMPORTANT INFORMATION
A tattoo is a superficial wound, and during tattooing, ink is inserted into the dermis using a needle. To support your body during the healing process, it is important to take care of your immune system, as your overall health plays a major role in how well a tattoo heals. If your immune system is weak, your diet is poor, you don’t get enough sleep, you are under constant stress, or you have hormonal or skin-related conditions, all of these factors can affect the healing process and may prolong and/or complicate it.
Keep in mind that a fresh tattoo is a wound over which a new layer of skin needs to form. During the first few months, this new skin is extremely thin and sensitive, and it requires specific care.
Octopus Studio is not responsible for any health complications, nor for difficult tattoo healing, in cases where the client, for any reason, hides their health condition from our staff before the tattoo procedure.
Health Condition
You are required to inform us before the start of tattooing if any of the following health conditions apply to you on the day of the appointment:
- diabetes
- epilepsy
- hemophilia
- persistent cough
- skin conditions
- heart problems
- blood pressure issues
- flu-like symptoms
- pregnancy and/or breastfeeding
- elevated temperature
- breathing difficulties
- fainting when having blood drawn
- blood-borne diseases (HIV, hepatitis, etc.)
In some cases, these health conditions do not pose a problem for tattooing, e.g. if you have a runny nose due to allergies or you have low blood pressure. In that case, the tattoo artist may recommend that you take something to boost your immune system and eat a normal meal before tattooing to raise your blood sugar levels.
Some conditions require prior consultation with a general practitioner or other medical professionals (e.g. a dermatologist in the case of specific skin diseases). If you have diabetes, epilepsy, heart or blood pressure problems, blood-borne diseases, or any kind of skin condition (seborrhea, psoriasis), please consult with qualified medical personnel about the impact of tattooing on your health before booking a tattoo appointment.
PREGNANT AND BREASTFEEDING WOMEN
We do not tattoo pregnant or breastfeeding women (no exceptions). During pregnancy and breastfeeding, the body goes through a large number of different changes. Although the chances of a tattoo causing any specific health issue are very small, medical practice in Croatia is such that even the slightest negative change would be attributed to it.“You got a rash on your neck? That’s because of the tattoo on your leg. ”
Joking aside, during pregnancy and breastfeeding, the health of the mother and child comes first.
The tattoo studio isn’t going anywhere, and you will always have time to get tattooed after breastfeeding. 🙂
CONSUMPTION
FOOD
Please eat a normal meal no later than 2 hours before your appointment, especially if you have low blood pressure or are very anxious. If you arrive on an empty stomach, or if due to nerves you’ve had nothing but coffee and cigarettes that day, low blood sugar combined with stress will cause you to feel unwell during or after the tattoo.
MEDICATIONS
If, within 24 hours before the appointment, you have taken any medication that dilates the circulatory system (e.g. Aspirin or anticoagulants), you must inform our staff before the procedure. A dilated circulatory system can lead to heavier bleeding during and after the tattoo.
If you are on a specific regular therapy (e.g. medication for diabetes or epilepsy), please consult your general practitioner before booking an appointment. If you are taking regular prescribed medication (for example, for diabetes or epilepsy), please consult your general practitioner before booking your appointment.
ALCOHOL AND INTOXICANTS
If you have consumed larger amounts of alcohol and/or any intoxicating substances (drugs) within 24 hours prior to your appointment, please make sure to inform our staff. Alcohol dilates blood vessels, which can lead to increased swelling and bleeding during or after tattooing, potentially affecting the healing process. Both also impact pain sensitivity, meaning the tattooing process may be more painful than usual.
Octopus Tattoo Studio reserves the right to refuse service to anyone we suspect is under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.
INDIVIDUAL FACTORS
Healing of a tattoo can be affected by specific individual factors such as:
Skin type
Some people have skin more prone to the growth of hypertrophic tissue, i.e. scarring, which can result in the tattoo being raised in certain areas, forming scar-like tissue. People with oilier, acne-prone skin may experience redness and pimples on the tattoo, as well as prolonged healing. If pimples appear on the tattoo, do not squeeze them—contact us for a check-up.
Choice of placement
Tattoos on certain parts of the body heal with more difficulty due to skin stretch and constant movement (arm and leg creases). In these areas, the skin is thin and sensitive, and ink blowouts and uneven line healing are possible. The skin on the inner lip, soles, and palms (including the sides of the fingers) does not hold ink like the rest of the body because skin cells regenerate much faster in these areas, causing the tattoo to fade more quickly.
The choice of placement and design is the client’s final responsibility. The tattoo artist may suggest that you avoid highly visible areas that cannot be covered by clothing or advise against tattooing the name of a partner you’ve been with for six months, but the final decision is yours and you bear full responsibility for your choice.
When choosing a placement, you must be aware that the human body is not a flat surface and not perfectly symmetrical. For this reason, some designs may appear distorted, especially on locations like the arm (e.g. a straight line down the arm will look straight only while you are standing upright with your arm at your side; moving and rotating the arm will make the line appear curved). When the stencil is applied to the body, carefully examine the design from all angles, as subsequent complaints cannot be accepted.
Activities
If you are planning a seaside vacation, skiing, a festival, or similar activities, keep in mind that this may affect your ability to care for a fresh tattoo—or the tattooing itself. If the skin gets sunburned in the area you want tattooed, you will need to wait until the inflammation subsides.
Cosmetics
The composition of cosmetic products you use near a fresh tattoo can affect its healing, i.e. irritate it. Do not wash a new tattoo with classic perfumed shower gels or apply regular skin creams over it, as they contain substances that may be irritating. For at least 10 days before the tattoo session, do not apply products containing glitter or self-tanning creams to the skin so that this cosmetics does not end up in the wound during tattooing (as they are practically impossible to remove from the skin).
OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION
The pigments we use for tattooing are produced by reputable, verified manufacturers and certified in accordance with the REACH regulation.
Classic black tattoo ink is carbon-based, and reactions to it are extremely rare. At Octopus, we have had only one case of an allergic reaction to black ink over a period of 10 years.
In people who are prone to allergies, red or green tattoo inks may cause issues.
If you are not sure whether the composition of the ink could be a problem for you and you are planning a color tattoo, a dot test can be done—at the placement where the tattoo would be, several very small dots are tattooed using the colors you want. If there is no allergic reaction within the next 14 days, we can use these colors for the tattoo. If any reaction occurs (more pronounced redness, pimples, swelling, severe itching, rash, and the like), we do not recommend color tattooing and suggest you consider a black’n’grey variant of the desired design.
In case of any problems with tattoo healing (inflammation, severe redness, pimples, increased swelling or bleeding, purulent discharge, etc.), you must contact us for an examination as soon as possible. If you are unable to come, you can send us a photo of the tattoo so we can try to assess what is the problem. Photos should be sharp and taken close-up, and you can send them to info.octopustattoo@gmail.com
